Baptist Friendship House
WorldCrafts’ partnership with Baptist Friendship House has provided job opportunities for women who are unable to work full time for a variety of reasons. The safe, encouraging, and faith-based work space facilitates continued healing from traumatic experiences many of them have endured.
One artisan escaped a dangerous situation in Central America. After a family member was murdered, she was threatened with murder. Baptist Friendship House assisted her with her asylum paperwork and various needs, and has helped her feel safe again. Although she is a high school graduate, her degree will not transfer to the United States, so the staff at Baptist Friendship House is helping her fulfill her educational goals. The artisan is excited about becoming a permanent resident of the United States, and she now has dreams and hope for the future.
Another artisans shared, “I was feeling helpless and hopeless when I started creating pottery. As I began making the pottery, I realized how something beautiful can come from a ball of clay. I began to understand how my life could change and felt better about myself. Creating pottery helped give me hope.”.
When the women artisans know they are producing something that will be displayed in people’s home’s across the country, they get excited and their self-confidence grows. It’s wonderful to see their self-esteem increase as they utilize their creative skills.
